What It Means to be a Top Pay Carrier

Back to news

Being a Top Pay Carrier is more than putting an emblem on a truck. It’s a carrier’s statement about the short-term and long-term value they have of their drivers. Top Pay Carrier recognition is a coveted award from the National Transportation Institute (NTI). Drivers can know that their company provides career stability and excellent benefits.

Top Pay Carrier certification is an elite award not given to just any carrier. Companies must qualify in three major categories. Top tier pay, health and retirement benefits, and carrier stability. The process is not an easy one to qualify in. Carriers who receive the award can stand out in a competitive industry.

To be a Top Pay Carrier, carriers must meet these requirements in each category:

Pay

Potential income must be in the top 10 percent of carriers to meet the requirements. The National Transportation Institute tests pay throughout a ten-year period. “Using this approach allows a driver to evaluate his or her long-term earning level, not just the “teaser” rates that occur in a competitive market.” -National Transportation Institue

Benefits

Carriers’ healthcare plans get tested in real-life scenarios. Scenarios such as premium cost over ten years, ten-day hospital stays, a severe situation such as a heart attack, and more. The NTI use these tests to determine the effectiveness of a health care plan.

Carriers must also provide top retirement plans for their drivers. Retirement plans get tested over a twenty-year scenario. How much the employee and company contribute to the retirement plan determines a carrier’s national rank. The total amount after twenty-years is calculated against the national standards.

Career Stability

The stability of a carrier is taken into account for determining a driver’s job security. The NTI uses a carriers Dunn & Brad rating (http://smallbusiness.chron.com/companys-dun-bradstreet-rating-12823.html) to assess stability. Carrier stability falls into three categories of dry vans, refrigerated, and flatbeds.

Being a Top Pay Carrier is not a rule for any company. Lawrence Freight though strives for the best for their drivers. Lawrence Freight proudly displays this award for meeting all requirements.
